Earthquakes in Japan: A History of Devastating Natural Disasters
Ancient Origins
Although there is mention of an earthquake in Yamato (what is now Nara Prefecture) on August 23, 416, the first earthquake to be reliably recorded in Japan occurred on December 31, 1703. This powerful earthquake, with a reconstructed intensity of 8 on the Mercalli scale, caused significant damage and loss of life.
Modern Tragic Events
One of the most devastating earthquakes in Japan's history occurred on March 11, 2011. This earthquake, with a magnitude of 9.0, triggered a massive tsunami that caused widespread destruction and claimed the lives of at least 20,000 people. In addition, a powerful earthquake on New Year's Day 2024 toppled houses in central Japan, highlighting the ongoing threat posed by these natural disasters in the country.

Japan has a long history of seismic activity, with numerous major earthquakes occurring throughout its history.
